  • In iMovie 11, how do I get a typewriter effect on a title (where each letter appears one after the other)?

- Questions from iMovie users

The typewriter effect is a text effect that looks like the words are typed letter by letter using a typewriter. iMovie previously allowed you to create typewriter effect title in your video using a plug-in called Typewriter. But the later version of iMovie removed the plug-in support so that you can't do typewriter effect with iMovie anymore.

Although there is no typewriter effect title in iMovie, you can easily add it with the help of some third-party app or make typewriter effect with a powerful online iMovie alternative.

Part 1 How to Add Typewriter Effect Titles to iMovie

Even though the iMovie's built-in collection of title animations doesn't offer the typewriter effect, you can also add the typewriter effect to iMovie with the help of Keynote.

Keynote is a presentation software which is great at text. You have total control over the font, the background color, the size, and hundreds of text effects. With Keynote, you can create complex typing text effect and use it in iMovie.

Here is the simple tutorial of using Keynote to create a typewriter effect title and then add it to your iMovie video.

Step 1
Start by launching Keynote and accessing its Wide Theme library, then choose blank white theme.
Step 2
Adjust the size of the slide and get rid of the sample text, then find the Color Fill menu and change the slide’s background color to green.
Step 3
Click on the Text tool to type in your words and then edit it on font, color, size, location, and more.
Step 4
Then, select the text and go to Animate button on the top right of the screen, then click on Build In and Add an Effect to find the Typewriter effect from the drop-down menu.
Step 5
Select the Typewriter effect and apply it to your text, then you can change some things like the duration and direction. Make sure to check the build order here and have it start after transitions.
Step 6
review your typewriter effect to check the final result. Then go to the File menu and export the typewriter effect in the QuickTime video file format.
Step 7
Now you can bring the typewriter effect you just created in Keynote into iMovie and drag and drop it on the timeline so that it is directly above the video clip to which you want to add the typewriter effect. Here remember to use the iMovie's Green/Blue Screen feature to make the background of the text overlay transparent.
